Why We Needed the Next Step in Voice AI

Earlier versions of PickMyCall were built using a traditional pipeline:
speech to text, language model, text to speech.
It worked, but it introduced delays at every stage. Even a short pause can break the flow of a phone conversation, causing callers to talk over the system or feel that it is not truly listening.

At the same time, SMBs were asking for more: better name recognition, faster understanding, fewer errors, and improved call stability. To reach that level, we needed a foundation model built natively for voice to voice interaction.

Going Native Speech to Speech with Nova Sonic

Amazon Nova Sonic provided exactly what we needed: a unified speech to speech model that both understands and generates voice without relying on multiple systems in between. This architecture change reduced complexity and created a smoother, more predictable call flow.

The performance improvements were immediate:
minimum latency dropped from around two seconds to 300 milliseconds,
maximum latency fell from seven seconds to about two,
and average latency improved from roughly 4.5 seconds to just 800 milliseconds.

These gains pushed PickMyCall into a new tier of conversational quality. Responses arrive almost instantly, and natural turn taking feels fluid, with no awkward pauses or interruptions. During implementation, we also saw improvements in accuracy, name recognition, pronunciation, and stability, resolving issues that previously caused timing errors or call disconnects. The simplicity of integrating Nova Sonic within our existing frameworks allowed us to build and test a fully functioning prototype within days, accelerating our path to a production ready version.

Security remained a priority throughout the process. Running Nova Sonic inside Amazon Bedrock provided full control over how data is handled, encrypted, and protected, reinforcing our enterprise grade approach to privacy and safety.
